Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, that strengthens the deep postural muscles of the stomach and back.

Pilates is designed to:

  • Strengthen the core postural muscles giving good core stability.
  • To correct muscle imbalances which are often the cause of pain and dysfunction.
  • To improve posture and postural awareness.
  • To promote suppleness and flexibility.
  • To allow balanced, controlled, co-ordinated movement.

Pilates is now recognised by modern medicine for its role in the prevention and rehabilitation of back pain through its retraining of the deep stomach and back muscles. Pilates also trains the deep muscles of the neck, shoulders and upper back which may be beneficial in the prevention of neck and shoulder pain. Pilates provides a method of exercise that focuses on correct movement quality not quantity, core stabilisation and correction of posture.
